Summary:
Wonder was about a young boy named August, with an extreme facial abnormality. He went from being sheltered, and home schooled all of his life because of surgeries, and other extreme health conditions, to succeeding at a public school his 5th grade year. The book starts with developing the main character by explaining what was wrong with him, and his parents introducing the idea of going to a public school, instead of continuing with being home schooled. It then goes through his introduction to public school and meeting kids who haven't seen anyone like him, to the lows of starting 5th grade which included bulling, segregation, name calling, and many more hardships he had to face. In between his problems, the reader was about to read about his parents and sisters feelings about Auggie, his face, how they felt about him going to school and their own personal lives and the sisters personal problems with school. The book ended with the highs of the 5th grade: becoming best friends with many students, having the support of his fellow students and student parents, and graduating the 5th grade with an award called the Henry Ward Beecher medal. He received his metal because of the courage, character and kindness he displayed. The nature of kindness that isn't expressed in the beginning, is expressed in the end. August's impact helped each character to grow into a better person and display kindness more than the normal display.
Teacher Evaluation:
This book was much better than the movie. The challenges Auggie faced, very well could be what our students experience on the inside. Being segregated from other students because how they look or how much money they have, can cause major self issues. Auggie faced these challenges and overcame them, and ended up bringing the more than normal kindness out in almost everyone he crossed paths with. Students can take from this book that no matter what bad situation they face, they can overcome and succeed, and that one small act of kindness can trigger the greatest impact not only in the persons adversity, but in the community so that we all can treat each other with a little more kindness than normal. I would us this book to help teach kindness to my students and to teach no matter the adversity, to never give up.
